In this fascinating mystery novel, John Bland, a mediocre writer of police novels, moves with his wife to the countryside. Bland takes advantage of the surprising trip of his wife to London to make a courtesy visit to his only neighbor, an old lady. When the old woman finds out that Bland is a writer, she tells him a mysterious story that supposedly she experienced in her youth. The writer, in turn, tells his neighbor another mysterious story in which both of them are the main characters.
