St. MARK, the EVANGELIST.

HIS Evangelift was defcended from Jewish Parents, and fuppofed to have been converted by fome of the Apóftles; perhaps by St. Peter, whom he conftantly attended in his Travels; but however this be, he preached in Italy and at Rome, where he wrote the Gofpel which is called after his Name. We are told by Eufebius, that he was fent by St. Peter into Egypt to preach the Gofpel, and having planted a Church in Alexandria, the idolatrous Inhabitants entered it while he was performing Divine Service, and binding his feet with Cords, dragged him through the Streets to a Precipice near the Sea, leaving him there in a Prifon for that Night, The next Morning they dragged him about in the fame Manner, 'till he expired, and afterwards burnt his mangled Body.

St. LUKE, the EVANGELIST

T. Luke was born at Antioch, the Metropolis of Syria, and travelled for Improvement into feveral Parts of Greece and Egypt, where he became particu larly skilled in Phyfic, which he made his Profeffion; and was alfo famous for his Dexterity in Painting, He became the infeparable Companion of St. Paul in all his Travels, and conftant Fellow-labourer in the Work of the Miniftry, who calls him the beloved Phyfician. The Time or Manner of his Death is not very well agreed on by the Ancients; but fome affert, that after coming into Greece he fuccefs fully preached the Gospel, 'till at last a Party of Infidels oppofing his Doctrines, they dragged him from the Place where he was preaching, and hung him on an Olive Tree, in the Soth, or, according to St. Jerome, in the 84th Year of his Age.

St. JOHN, the EVANGELIST.

HIS beloved Difciple of our Lord was a Native of Galilee, the Son of Zebedee and Salome, and Brother of James the Great.-After the Afcenfion of our bleffed Saviour, he applied himself to propagating Christianity, and founded many Churches in Afia; but being accufed as a Subverter of the Religion of the Empire, he was fent bound to Rome, by Order of the Emperor Domitian, and thrown into a Caldron of boiling Oil; but was taken out unhurt.-This not being fufficient to convince this cruel Emperor, or abate his Fury, he ordered him to be transported to the Ifland of Patmos, where he wrote his Book of Revelations. After the Death of Domitian his Succeffor recalled thofe that had been banished, and St. Jobą return'd again to Afia, and fixed his Seat at Ephesus, 'till Death put an End to all his Toils and Suffere ings, in the 98th Year of his Age.

Mix'd with Fish, or Bird, or Beast.

Help, O Chrift, thy Works decay:
Man is out of Order hurl'd,
Parcel'd out to all the World;
Lord, thy broken Concert raise,
And the Mufic fhall be Praife.

A PRAYER for the true Ufe of the HOLY SCRIPTURES.

Gracious God and moft merciful Father, who haft vouchfafed unto us the rich and precious Jewel of thy Holy Word, affift us with thy Spirit, that it may be written in our Hearts to our everlasting Comfort, to reform us, to renew us according to thine own Image, to build us up, and edifie us into the perfect Building of thy Chrift, fanctifying and increafing in us all heavenly Virtues. Grant this, O heavenly Father, for Jefus Chrift's Sake. Amen.
