PREFACE.

MONGST the Variety of fmall Books publifhed for the Inftruction of Youth, there appears not to have been any of this Kind yet offered for their Amusement; and as this pleasing Method of teaching Children has been found, by Experience, to be an eafy Way of leading them on in Reading, the Author has been induced, though at a confiderable Expence, to publifh this fmall HIEROGLYPHICK BIBLE, with a Defign to give them an early Tafte for the Holy Scriptures, and to engage them, as they may advance in Years, more earneftly and ferioufly in the Study of the Sacred Books of the Old and New Teftaments.

The pious and early. Inftruction of Children, is certainly a material Part of every Parent's Duty; and Youth has at all Times been much benefited when, by Means of lively and ftriking Images, the most remarkable Things that exift in the World are reprefented to them; efpecially if the Hiftory of the Holy Scriptures is imprinted into them in their younger Days."

It is, above all, a great Advantage, when thofe Perfons who have the conftant Care and Infpection over young Children, and therewith gain an Afcendency or Power over fuch tender Minds, to

guide their Thoughts and Inclinations as they please. (I fay, when these Perfons are able and fit to inftruct and teach the Children.) And when they poffefs that Capacity to excite a Defire for Knowledge, which naturally dwells in our Hearts, it is an agreeable Method to represent pleasing Figures to them: Let the proper Time never flip, when young Infants fhow an Inclination to receive Inftruction; but don't compel Children to learn certain Tasks in certain measured Hours, for fuch Compulfion, or Conftraint, is oftener an Obftacle than an Encouragement towards learning the neceffary and useful Sciences.

To render this fmall Book useful and instructing, we have followed in chufing Paffages from Holy Scripture the Order obferved therein; beginning with the Creation, and finished with the Redemption of Mankind, interfpersed with select moral Doctrines; and of all this we have quoted the most remarkable Places in the Old and Ne Teftaments.

The whole Sentences, which give an Explanation of the Figures, are placed at the Bottom of each Page; and the Words, which are reprefented by Figures, are particularly diftinguished in Italic. By fuch facilitated and pleafing Means all fenfible and well-educated Mothers, Governeffes, and Nurses, have it in their Power to teach and inftruct even the youngest Children with proper Ideas of the most important Doctrines, and make them early acquainted with the momentous Truths in the Word of God,
