Excerpt from Catalogue of the Free Public Library of the City of Lawrence, 1873

Lawrence has long enjoyed the benefits of agood Library. The Franklin Library Association was chartered by the Legislature of Massachusetts, April, 1847, and the following letter to Capt. Chas. H. Bigelow, its first President, not only gives in very concise terms the wishes and motives of the donor of the first valuable gift to the Library, but is also a key to the motives which inspired its founders.
