VII.

Up, where eternal beauties bloom,
And pleasures all divine,

Where wealth that never can consume,
And endless glories shine.

VIII.

Where saints in fields unfading rove,
And seraphs make abode;
Where reign for ever, smiling love,
My SAVIOUR, and my GoD.

HYMN CXLVII. L. M.

To Jesus, the Captain of our Salvation.

JESUS,

I.

ESUS, the Sov'reign, and the friend!
On thee our feeble souls rely;
O may thy pow'r, and grace attend,
When danger, or temptation's nigh.

[ocr errors]

Direct me in thy holy way

Of truth, of righteousness, and love,
Which leads to everlasting day,
To thy divine abodes above.

III.

This path thy great example shew'd,
The path to bliss, and high renown;
Which thy victorious saints have trod,
And gain'd a bright immortal crown.

IV.

Our bosoms may their zeal inspire,
Bravely to war, and win the prize;

O be our passions all on fire,
When glory calls us to the skies!

V.

What tho' a thousand snares assail,
A thousand foes our progress bar;
Why should our force or spirits fail,
While thou art Captain of the war?

VI.

Yes, mighty JESUS! thou shalt reign,
'Till all thy haughty foes submit ;
'Till hell, and all her trembling train
Become like dust beneath thy feet.

VII.

Then rescued souls shall bless thy pow's,
Thy arm shall full salvation bring;
Thy saints in that illustrious hour

Shall conquer with their conqu'ring King.

VIII.

And when thro' heav'n's bright gates of gold,
Thou lead'st thy chosen to the skies,
May we the shining pomp behold,
And partners of the triumph rise!

IX.

Then rang'd thy blazing throne around, The SAVIOUR's honors we'll proclaim; While heav'n's transported realms resound 'Thy glorious deeds and darling name.

HYMN CXLVIII.

L. M.

Jesus inviting the weary and heavy laden.

I.

YE weary souls, the SAVIOUR cries,

(Divine compassion in his eyes)

O come, and I will give you rest,
Believe, obey me, and be blest.

II.

My yoke is liberty, and peace;
I bid the mourner's sorrow cease;
I break the captive's galling chain,
And none shall ask my aid in vain.

III.

O gracious SAVIOUR, guide, and friend !
And could thy greatness condescend
To visit worms of mortal birth,
And stoop thy glories down to earth?
iv.

My soul and all her pow'rs rejoice,
To hear the kind inviting voice;
Waft it ye echoes wide around:
There's life and transport in the sound!

v.

Awak'd from sin's delusive sleep,
My heavy guilt I feel and weep,
Beneath a weight of woes opprest,
Jesus Irun to thee for rest.

VI.

O from thy throne of bliss above,
Shed down a look of heav'nly love;
That balm shall sweeten all my pain,
And my sad soul shall smile again.

VII.

By thy divine transporting pow'r,
My ruin'd nature raise, restore,
And let my life and temper shine
In fair conformity to thine.

HYMN CXLIX. L. M. Direction and Support, solicited.

A

I.

MIDST a world of hopes and fears, A wild of cares, of toils, and tears; Where foes alarm, and dangers threat, And pleasures kill, and glories cheat.

II.

Shed down, Oh LORD! a heav'nly ray
To guide me in the doubtful way,
And o'er me hold thy shield of pow'r
To guard me in the dang'rous hour.

III.

Teach me the flatt'ring path to shun,
In which the thoughtless many run;
Who for a shade, the substance miss,
And grasp their ruin in their bliss.

IV.

Each sacred principle impart,

The faith that sanctifies the heart,
Hope that to heav'n's high vault aspires,
And love that warms with holy fires.
