INTRODUCTION

In this thesis I have endeavored to show the origin and

trace the development of the words found in the first two hun

dred

twelve lines of "El Cid".

Castellanos".

The text used for this work was the edition "Clasicos There is a slight difference between this text and the paleographic edition of Menendez Piñal. The classic edition divides the epic into cantos, with a title indicative of the subject matter, while the paleographic edition does not. There are also a few lines interpolated in the classic edition which do not appear in the paleographic edition, such as the line following line 14, also line 16b; 69b, and the three lines following line 181.

The two books used as reference in this work have been the Gramática and Vocabulario of Menéndez Pidal and the etymological vocabulary of J. D. M. Ford's "Old Spanish Readings". The plan followed has been to take a certain number of lines for consideration and below the horizontal line to indicate the root of the word and trace the development to the modern Spanish form. Nearly all the words in the lines thus considered are of Latin origin, and a few have come from the German, Greek, and Arabic languages.
