collection) that the portrait facing the title-page was printed on the verso of a1; but the British Museum copy E1126 has the blank leaf, usually missing, and this makes it clear that the portrait was printed on a separate leaf, not reckoned in the register.

Signatures H of the English and F of the Latin seem to have been printed on half sheets of four leaves each, so that there were no blanks at the end.

The purpose of this reprint is to put into readers' hands a book resembling as closely as may be the book which Milton saw. A few misprints, however, have been corrected, which it seemed indecent to leave. Of these due warning is given.

No critical apparatus seemed necessary. But readings of the edition of 1673 are cited where they appear to correct a mere misprint of 1645. The opportunity has further

been taken to call attention to certain

doubtful places in the Latin and Italian poems which seem hitherto to have escaped discussion.
